Orange Trio Leads ‘Cuse Past Colgate

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Tyus Battle posted a game-high 24 points, freshman Oshae Brissett finished with 20 points and junior Frank Howard added 18 points to lead Syracuse (8-1) to a 72-58 victory over Colgate (3-6) Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome.
The game was the 170th meeting between the two Central New York rivals. It's the most frequent pairing in Syracuse hoop history. The Orange have now won 52 straight against the Raiders.
Junior Paschal Chukwu recorded five points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Howard added six assists and six boards.
How it was Decided
With Syracuse clinging to a 61-54 lead with 5:45 to play, an 8-0 run pulled the game out of reach of the Raiders. Howard knocked down two free throws and a jumper along with four additional Orange free throws down stretch to cement the victory.
Game Summary
An 8-0 Syracuse run broke open a tie game. Howard sank a free throw, Battle drained a 3-pointer, and Chukwu and Brissett followed with layups to put the Orange up 13-8. Battle scored the next eight points for Syracuse to build a 23-16 advantage with 8:58 to play in the first half.
A 13-2 run gave Syracuse a 36-20 lead, its largest of the game. Howard converted a three-point play followed by a jumper from Battle and a trey from Howard Washington. Brissett completed a three-point play and Howard dunked to cap off the run.
The Orange knocked down 15-of-26 (57.7 percent) shots from the field and entered the break with a 38-26 lead.
An 11-5 Colgate run to start the second half trimmed the Syracuse lead to six. Brissett and Marek Dolezaj hit back-to-back jumpers but a Colgate 3-pointer left the Orange with a 47-40 lead with 11:34 remaining.
A 9-3 Syracuse run, fueled by eight points from Battle, constructed a 56-43 lead with 8:29 remaining.
Numbers Of Note
Syracuse committed only five fouls in the game. The last time the Orange had fewer than seven fouls in a game was during the 2005-06 season when the team had six versus West Virginia.
The Orange shot 52.1 percent (25-of-48) from the field, while the Raiders connected on 41.2 percent (21-of-51). Syracuse held a 33-23 advantage on the glass and outscored Colgate 28-10 in the paint.
Syracuse remained an unblemished 7-0 at home this season.
Battle (8-of-18), Brissett (7-of-12) and Howard (6-of-12) combined to shoot 50 percent from the field.
Jack Ferguson led the Raiders with 20 points. He hit 6-of-12 3-pointers and added two free throws.
Colgate finished with 14 3-point baskets, just two shy of the record for a Syracuse opponent.
