Orange lose on the road to Pittsburgh, 80-75
PITTSBURGH – After an exciting 18-day stretch that produced five straight victories, the Orange men's basketball team (16-10, 8-5 ACC) saw its winning streak end Saturday, Feb. 11 with an 80-75 loss to Pittsburgh (14-11, 3-9 ACC) at the Petersen Events Center.

Graduate students Andrew White III and John Gillon led three Orange in double figures. They each scored 20 points, while Frank Howard chipped in a career-high 12 points in 25 minutes off the bench.

White III was 7-for-16 from the floor, including three 3-pointers. It was his sixth straight 20-point effort. White III is averaging 24.2 points per contest in that span. Gillon connected on seven of his 15 field-goal tries. He also sank all five of his free throws to extend his streak without a miss at the charity stripe to 34. Â

Pitt's Cameron Johnson led all scorers with 22 points. He was 6-of-9 shooting, with all six of his field goals coming from beyond the 3-point line. Michael Young added 21 points for the Panthers to along with nine rebounds and six assists. Sheldon Jeter registered a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Syracuse shot the ball well early and led 15-10 a little more than seven minutes into the contest before a 14-3 run by the Panthers, capped by Johnson's third 3-pointer of the half, put the hosts in front 24-18 with 5:56 left in the opening stanza. Â

A dunk by Tyler Roberson at the 5:31 mark snapped an 0-for-9 Orange shooting slump, but a trifecta by Chris Jones a minute later gave Pitt a 27-20 advantage. Consecutive three-point plays by Gillon and Howard closed the gap to one, but the Panthers closed the first half with another scoring spurt. Pitt tallied eight of the last 10 points in the period, including another 3-pointer by Johnson, to push the lead back to seven, 35-28, at the break.

In the second half, Syracuse struggled offensively. The Orange missed eight of their first nine shots after intermission and found themselves down 41-30 with 14:51 to play. A layup by Young at the 13:21 mark gave the home team its largest lead of the game, 45-32.

Pitt still led by double digits, 63-53, with 4:40 to go in regulation before Syracuse made it interesting down the stretch. The Orange trimmed the margin to 73-68 on a Howard triple with 1:10 left. Then inched to within three, 78-75, on a Gillon three with seven ticks remaining on the clock. Gillon fouled Jeter on Pitt's next possession and Jeter hit both free throws to close out the game.

The Panthers dominated the glass, outrebounding Syracuse 41-25. Pitt was also credited with an impressive 25 assists on 26 made baskets. Jamel Artis dished out 10 of those assists in addition to being the fourth Panther in double figures with 16 points.

The Panthers shot 48 percent from the field (26-54) compared to 43 percent (26-60) for Syracuse. Pitt was 8-for-18 (.440) from 3-point range, while the Orange made six of their 20 attempts (.300) from deep.
