2/18/2017 9:58:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 5 Syracuse swept a doubleheader in the Carrier Dome on Saturday, Feb. 18 to improve its record to 3-0 this season. The Orange defeated Canisius, 18-6, in the first game before beating Binghamton, 16-5, in the nightcap.
Â
Junior Riley Donahue and sophomore Nicole Levy had five points apiece against Canisius to lead the Orange offense. Levy finished the day with eight points (3g, 5a), while Donahue had seven (3g, 4a). Junior Kelzi Van Atta tied her career high with a team-high three goals against Binghamton.
Â
HOW SYRACUSE DEFEATED CANISIUS
Syracuse never trailed against the Golden Griffins (1-2) as the Orange scored the first five goals of the game and led 10-3 at halftime. Levy had assists on Syracuse's first two goals and then scored the third goal of the game to spark the Syracuse offense. The second half started much like the first as the Orange netted eight unanswered goals. Eight different players found the back of the net during the offensive outburst that gave the Orange their largest lead of the day at 18-3.
Â
"It was a great team effort," Syracuse head coach Gary Gait said. "We out-worked them. The pressure we were able to put on them on the ride led to some goals on transition. The defense cleaned up a of things (from last week). Overall, I was extremely happy."
Â
HOW SYRACUSE DEFEATED BINGHAMTON
Syracuse used the same formula that worked in the first game against Binghamton, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first 13 minutes of the game. The Syracuse defense and goalkeeper Asa Goldstock shutout the Bearcats (0-2) for the first 20:21before Callon Williams put Binghamton on the scoreboard. The Orange tallied the final goal of the first half and the first five of the second to take a commanding lead.
Â
"I thought it was a great effort by our team after they already played a game today," Gait said. "We were focused, considering we had a delay in between, stepped up and executed on the offensive and defensive ends, especially in that first half. We were really playing some great lacrosse."
Â
OF NOTE
Syracuse featured a balanced offense in both games. Twelve different players scored at least one goal against the Golden Griffins, while 11 found the back of the net against the Bearcats.
Â
The Orange continued to dominate in the draw circle, winning 33-of-48 (.688) draw controls in the two games. Freshman Morgan Widner had 14 draw controls in the first game and 11 in the second. She has now recorded double-digit draw control totals in all three games this season.
