Graduate transfer earns first conference honor
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Graduate transfer John Gillon is this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office. The weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel.
The conference award marks the first for the Houston, Texas native and the first for a Syracuse player this season.
Gillon had a record-breaking performance in Syracuse's 100-93 overtime road victory at North Carolina State, as the guard tallied a PNC Arena record and career-high 43 points. He converted 9-of-10 3-pointers to tie a school record and break a second venue record for triple baskets in a single game.
The scoring total is tied for fourth place on Syracuse's all-time single-game scoring list and marked the first time an SU player has amounted 43 points since assistant coach Gerry McNamara had 43 in an NCAA tournament game versus BYU on March 18, 2004.
Gillon also had a team-leading nine assists in the effort.
The graduate student went on to help Syracuse defeat No. 9 Virginia at home with six points, four assists, two rebounds and two steals in 37 minutes of action on the hardwood. Gillon's basket in the final minute of play helped secure the 66-62 win.
Gillon ranks fourth in scoring for Syracuse with an average of 10.2 points per game and leads the Orange in assists, dishing out 5.3 per outing.
The Orange take to the road to face conference foe Clemson on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at Littlejohn Coliseum.
