Orange Locks Up No. 8 Seed In ACC Tournament
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Graduate student Andrew White III made his final regular-season home game one to remember. The Richmond, Va. native tied Gene Waldron's Syracuse men's Carrier Dome record with a career-high 40 points to lead the Orange (18-13, 10-8 ACC) to a 90-61 victory against Georgia Tech (17-14, 8-10 ACC) on Saturday, March 4.
Â
The 30,448 fans in attendance, which marked the largest on-campus crowd in college basketball this season, watched as White III went 12-for-16 from the floor, including 8-of-9 from 3-point range. His eight trifectas were one short of the school single-game record, and he came up one point shy of the overall men's Dome scoring record held by Rutgers' Quincy Douby. Douby went for 41 points against the Orange back in 2006. Waldron put up 40 against Iona on Dec. 4, 1983.
Â
With the victory, Syracuse earned a first-round bye in the 2017 New York Life ACC Tournament. The Orange are the No. 8 seed and will face No. 9 seed Miami in the second round Wednesday, March 8 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Â
Freshman Tyus Battle and graduate student John Gillon joined White III in double figures Saturday. Battle scored 22 points and Gillon added 10. Gillon also dished out 10 assists to post his third double-double of the year.
The one blemish on Gillon's Senior Day showing came late in the first half when he missed his second foul shot, ending his school-record streak at 48 straight made free throws. His 48 consecutive makes tied Virginia's Jeff Lamp for the third-longest streak in ACC history.
Â
The Orange hit six of their first seven shots from the floor against the Yellow Jackets, including four 3-pointers, and led 16-4 after a triple by freshman Taurean Thompson at the 15:07 mark. Syracuse cooled off after that, but still led 22-13 following a jumper by White III with eight minutes to go in the opening stanza.
Â
Shortly thereafter, the Orange regained their shooting touch. The hosts used an 11-5 run, capped by a White III 3-pointer, to take a 33-18 advantage with 5:18 to go before intermission. A Gillon layup with less than two minutes left in the stanza gave the Orange a 38-22 advantage, but Tech tallied the last four points of the half to make the score 38-26 at the break.
Â
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets extended their run to 13-0, closing the gap to 38-35 on a Josh Okogie layup with 17:40 to play. White III ended the Tech run with a 3-pointer less than 30 seconds later, and he pushed the margin to back to seven, 44-37, with another trifecta at the 15:26 mark.
Â
After the Yellow Jackets drew to within five, 49-44, with 12:12 remaining, White III keyed a 21-2 Syracuse surge that put the game away. He scored 17 of his 40 points during the run, hitting four 3-pointers and sinking five three throws. By the time Georgia Tech's Quinton Stephens converted a layup with 7:44 left the Syracuse advantage had swelled to 70-48.
Â
Another 3-pointer on Syracuse's next possession, this time by Gillon, stretched the Orange lead to 25 points, 73-48. Tech never got closer than 23 the rest of the way.
Â
The Orange connected on 29-of-53 field goals (.547) and were 15-of-23 (.652) from beyond the arc. Syracuse's 15 triples matched its season high. The Orange's 3-point field goal percentage was also a campaign best. By comparison, the Yellow Jackets shot 43.9 percent (25-57) from the floor and 25 percent (5-20) from long range.
Â
Okogie paced the Yellow Jackets with 16 points, while Ben Lammers added 10 points and nine rebounds. Stephens (12 points) and Tadric Jackson (11 points) rounded out Tech's double-digit scorers.
The ACC Tournament gets underway Tuesday, March 7 with three first-round games. The complete tournament bracket will be released later this evening.
