
Three Student-Athletes Honored at 44 Stars of Excellence Gala

Three Orange student-athletes earned recognition at the 2017 Syracuse University 44 Stars of Excellence Awards Gala. Senior Eric Anthony (football), junior Pat Castle (soccer), and senior Cameron Spera (dance) were honored for their demonstration of outstanding dedication and commitment to their student organization and its mission.
Anthony earned the Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service Award for his commitment to the community. The 2016-17 Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) vice president of community outreach and a leader of Syracuse's chapter of Uplifting Athletes, Anthony earned undergraduate degrees in finance and real estate from the Whitman School of Management. At Syracuse, he has helped spearhead the effort to raise more than $25,000 for children fighting rare diseases, delivered Easter baskets to children at Golisano Children's Hospital and brought the Beads of Courage program to Syracuse Athletics. He also won the 2017 ACC Top 6 Service award.
The 2016-17 SAAC president, Castle won the Award for Excellence by a Student Organization President for his leadership. A biotechnology major in the College of Arts & Sciences, Castle volunteers weekly at University Hospital in Syracuse. As the SAAC president, he facilitated leadership workshops for freshman student-athletes and brought the Project Life Movement to campus to build a registry for bone marrow donors. Castle also earned the 2017 ACC Top 6 Service award.
A two-time captain of the Orange Lady Dancers, Spera earned the Syracuse University Spirit Award. She served as the 2016-17 SAAC vice president of marketing and media. This past year, she facilitated relationship violence workshops for more than 500 Syracuse students, delivered an anti-bullying presentation at the Orange women School Day basketball game, and made multiple visits to area schools to inspire students to achieve in the classroom and in the community. A broadcast and digital journalism major in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Spera was also a 2017 ACC Top 6 Service award winner.
