The outstanding 1-2 midfield punch of Nick Mariano and Sergio Salcido for the No. 1 Syracuse men's lacrosse team (11-1, 4-0 ACC) have been named two of the 25 semifinalists for the Tewaaraton Award presented by Under Armour on Friday.
"This is a remarkable accomplishment for these student-athletes," said Jeffrey Harvey, Chairman of The Tewaaraton Foundation. "The Foundation and its board congratulates these talented players and their respective teams for being recognized by the Selection Committees as Tewaaraton Nominees."
Five men's and five women's finalists will be selected from these groups, announced on Thursday, May 11, and invited to the 17th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony on Thursday, June 1 in Washington, D.C.
The duo, which rank first and second in goals, assists and points for 'Cuse, was also named to the All-ACC Team this week, along with teammates Scott Firman and Ben Williams.
Â
Mariano enters the ACC semifinal leading the Orange with 29 goals and 43 points. He's also sporting the nation's 10th-longest goals streak, having found the back of the net in all-12 games this season. Mariano is on pace to lead the Orange in goals for the second-straight season since transferring from UMass prior to his junior season.
Salcido has emerged as one of the nation's best passing midfielders, on pace to break Syracuse's record for most assists by a midfielder this season. He enters the ACC semifinal with 28 helpers and 12 goals, looking for his second 50-point season in a row. Another two-time member of the All-ACC team, Salcido now has two of the top-nine single season assist totals amongst midfielders.
Both student-athletes are majoring in child and family studies at the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. This season was the second-straight season each was tabbed to the All-ACC Team.
Mariano, Salcido and the Orange will enter the ACC Tournament on Friday as the top seed and will square off with No. 18 North Carolina at 6 p.m. on ESPNEWS, ACC Network Extra and TK99/105.
