Paige Stoner and Aidan Tooker joined Colin Bennie in qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday night, with both earning a spot in the 3000-meter steeplechase. The NCAA Championship is June 7-10 in Eugene, Oregon.
Stoner, a first-time qualifier for the NCAA Championship, crossed the line in 10:06.26, which was the fourth-fastest time in her heat. She was the 11th-fastest time overall, garnering her a spot into the semifinals based on time. Teammate Sydney Leiher finished 25th overall in 10:28.46.
Tooker, a true freshman, ran a new personal-best time of 8:39.34, which was good for fifth in his heat. His time was the sixth-fastest overall, which was good for earning one of the 12 spots in semifinals.
In addition to the two qualifiers, another pair advanced to Saturday. Tia Thevenin posted a career-best time in the 100-meter hurdles (18.38 seconds) to advance to Saturday's quarterfinal round. Her time was the third-best in her heat, earning an automatic qualifying spot into the quarterfinal. It was also the 12th-best time overall.
Freddie Crittenden III also advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal, easily winning his heat and earning the subsequent automatic qualifying spot. His time of 13.69 seconds was the fifth-fastest time overall in the first round.
