5/9/2017 3:48:00 PM | Track and Field
Shortly after earning National Athlete of the Week honors from the USTFCCCA on Tuesday, junior sensation Justyn Knight was named ACC Performer of the Week.
Knight ran the world's fastest 5k of 2017 and the Payton Jordan Invitational, which was the fourth-fastest collegiate 5k of all-time.
Knight, who crossed the line in 13:17.51, shattering his own school record by nearly 10 seconds, also bested the previous ACC record that had stood for 33 years by almost seven seconds. Knight defeated Australia's Sam McEntee, Tanzanian Gabriel Geay and Oregon standout Edward Cheserek to win the event in the process.
Majoring in social work at the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, Knight's time reached the world standard and would qualify him to represent Canada at the IAAF World Championships in London in August.
Knight, who was both runner-up in the 5k at the NCAA Indoor Championships and runner-up at the NCAA Cross Country Championships this season heads into this week's ACC Championships where he'll look to add to his seven ACC individual championships and four ACC team titles between cross country and track.
Knight has also been a five-time All-American between cross country and track at Syracuse with more than a year of eligibility remaining.
