Four Syracuse men's lacrosse alums are set to continue training with the U.S. for the 2018 FIL Men's World Championships after U.S. head coach John Danowski selected the 'Cuse quartet from the initial tryout pool.
Matt Abbott '09, John Galloway '11, JoJo Marasco '13 and Joel White '11 are part of the 49 player training team that will prepare for the world championships in Netanya, Israel in July, 2018. The selections come after a three-day tryout period at US Lacrosse headquarters this past weekend.
"I am really grateful for the opportunity and really grateful to these men," said U.S. team head coach John Danowski. "It was beyond what my expectations were in terms of their effort, their energy, their collaborativeness, cheering for one another. It's really hard to do. There's a part of you that says, 'Man, I want that guy to fail' because it's a tryout. These guys weren't like that. You didn't see any of that. It was truly an inspiring experience for me."
Abbott, who currently plays for the Chesapeake Bayhawks, was a two-time USILA All-American following the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Championship seasons. He was both a Tewaaraton and Senior CLASS Award Finalist in 2009 and finished his career with 212 ground balls.
Â
Galloway was also a two-time goaltender of the year at 'Cuse, winning the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award in both 2010 and 2011 after leading the Orange to back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2008 and 2009. He concluded his career as the NCAA all-time leader in wins (59) and minutes played by a goalie (3,776). He posed a career record of 59-8 and still ranks eighth in NCAA history in career goals against average (7.33), including a 7.20 goals against average in NCAA Tournament play, which is a 'Cuse record.
Â
A Tewaaraton Award Finalist in 2013, Marasco was a USILA First Team All-American at 'Cuse in 2013 and one of the players to wear the famed 22 jersey. He then went on to the MLL where he currently plays for the New York Lizards and has 65 career goals. He was once again named an MLL All-Star this season.
White became the first defensive specialist to win the Lt. Donald C. MacLaughlin Jr. Award as the nation's most outstanding midfielder in 2010. He was a three-time USILA All-American, twice being named to the first team (2010, 2011) and was also a Tewaaraton Award finalist both seasons. The Cortland, N.Y. native is Syracuse's all-time leader in ground balls (283), points by a defender (28) and goals (18) by a defensive player. He won an NLL Championship this season with the Georgia Swarm and currently plays for the Rochester Rattlers in the MLL.
The team will return to US Lacrosse for a training weekend over Labor Day Weekend in early September and then have two more competitions leading up the world championship. The Team USA Fall Classic will be held at US Lacrosse on the weekend of Oct. 6-9 and the team will play in the Team USA Spring Premiere in Florida in early January.
