Dungey Named to Davey O'Brien Award Watch List

FORT WORTH, Texas – Orange junior Eric Dungey was one of 30 quarterbacks named to the watch list for the for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award on Wednesday, July 19. Presented by the Davey O'Brien Foundation, the award is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award and recognizes candidates who exemplify O'Brien's character, teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics.

Compiled by a subset of the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee, this year's watch list was selected based on player performance during the previous year and expectations heading into the 2017 college football season.

A member of the 2017 Maxwell Award Watch List as the nation's top player, Dungey set the SU sophomore records for most passing yards (2,679) and most yards of total offense (2,972) in 2016. He completed 230-of-355 passes with 15 touchdowns and ranked sixth nationally in completions per game (25.6), 12th in passing yards per game (297.7) and 13th in completion percentage (64.8). Dungey threw for at least 300 yards six times in the eight full games he played and topped the 400-yard mark against both Connecticut and Boston College.

In 17 career games, Dungey has passed for 3,977 yards and 26 touchdowns. The Lake Oswego, Ore. native holds the SU career records for most passing yards per game (233.9) and most yards of total offense per game (271.8).

The 16 semifinalists for the Davey O'Brien Award will be announced on Nov. 7, with the three finalists unveiled on Nov. 20. The winner will be announced live on ESPN Dec. 7 during The Home Depot College Football Awards Show.

Past Davey O'Brien Award winners include Syracuse quarterback Don McPherson, who took home the trophy in 1987. Orange signal caller Marvin Graves was a Davey O'Brien finalist in 1992.

Tickets start at $25 for non-conference games against Central Connecticut State, Middle Tennessee and Central Michigan, $30 for ACC matchups with Wake Forest and Boston College, $35 for the Oct. 7 Pittsburgh game on Orange Central Weekend, and $45 for the Clemson game on Oct. 13.
