U.S., Canada Advance to FIL World Cup Final

GUILDFORD, England – Kayla Treanor '16 and Michelle Tumolo '13 led Team USA's offense in its 19-8 victory against host England in the semifinals of the Federation of Lacrosse (FIL) Women's World Cup in Guildford, England on Thursday, July 20. The U.S. advances to the gold medal game where it will take on Team Canada, which needed overtime to defeat Australia, 8-6, in the other semifinal.

Treanor led all scorers with eight points on five goals and three assists and was named Most Valuable Player of the match. It marked the second time she was named Player of the Match against England. Earlier in the tournament, Treanor set a U.S. team single-game World Cup record with 12 points against the host country. She is the leading scorer in the tournament with 43 points (24g, 19a). Tumolo added five points on two goals and three assists.

England stayed within striking distance of the undefeated and No. 1 seed U.S. in the first half as it trailed by four, 9-5, at halftime. Treanor opened the scoring in the second half, finding the back of the net 29 seconds in. With Team USA leading, 10-6, Treanor recorded an unassisted goal to spark the U.S. on an 8-0 scoring run that put the game out of reach. Tumolo capped the run when she scored on an assist from Treanor, marking the third time in the game the two had connected for a goal.

England scored back-to-back goals to halt the scoring run, but Team USA added a goal with less than two minutes remaining for the 19-8 final. Becca Block '13 helped anchor the U.S. defense that held England scoreless for more than 20 minutes in the second half as Team USA pulled away.

The first semifinal between Canada and Australia was close throughout as neither team could pull away. Rising senior Alie Jimerson scored a goal in the first half to help Canada to a 5-3 halftime lead. Australia came out strong after intermission and netted three unanswered goals to take its first lead of the game at 6-5 with 3:20 left in regulation. The Canadians answered with a goal with 2:41 on the clock to force overtime. Canada took the lead for good in the first three minutes of overtime, and Jimerson added an insurance goal for the 8-6 final. She finished the day with three points (2g, 1a).

Earlier in the day, The Haudenosaunee Nationals lost to the Czech Republic, 18-6. Erin Francis '17 and Awehiyo Thomas '09 each recorded an assist in the contest.

Saturday's gold medal game between the United States and Canada at 10 a.m. Eastern time is a rematch of the 2013 final, which the United States won, 19-5. Katie Rowan '09 recorded 10 points (8g, 2a) in the contest and was named the game MVP.
