Freshman Kate Hostage records first career goal
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Syracuse women's soccer (2-0-1) kicked off the two-game road trip with a 3-2 victory over Army (1-1-1) Thursday night. Freshman Kate Hostage scored her first collegiate goal in her first career game for the Orange.
"Playing at someone else's stadium is always a challenge and Army is a team with a lot of pace up front," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "It was just about playing our game and not allowing them to come back in the game."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
At the 56-minute mark of the game, Hostage broke a 2-2 tie with her first goal of the season, taking a long pass from Sydney Brackett and putting it past the keeper from inside the box. Hostage is the first freshman to score a goal this season for the Orange and the fourth different goal scorer for Syracuse this year.
FIRST HALF FEATS
The teams combined to score four goals in the first half with the momentum swinging back and forth throughout the half. Senior Alex Lamontagne set the tone early, taking a pass from fellow senior Eva Gordon and drilling a ball that directed off the keeper and into the net in the first minute of the game. The Orange held a 1-0 lead until Army tied it up with a goal off a penalty kick in the 26 minute.
Sophomore Georgia Allen quickly put 'Cuse back on top, receiving a cross pass from Lamontagne and burying the ball in the net just 38 seconds after the Army goal for her first score of the season. Army snuck back in the game with a goal to make it 2-2 heading into halftime.
WITH THE ASSIST
Gordon recorded her second assist of the season, already surpassing her assist mark from 2016. Reigning assist co-leader Taylor Bennett notched her first of the year and Lamontagne added to her season points total with an assist of her own.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"I am really pleased for Alex Lamontagne, Georgia Allen and Kate Hostage on their goals, especially for Kate since this is her first game with us," said Wheddon. "We had a lot of people step up and play well. Sydney Brackett and Alex are both very dynamic forwards that will do a lot for us."
UP NEXT…
The Orange continue their road trip down in Gainesville as Syracuse takes on the Florida Gators at 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 27.
