'Cuse Comes Up Short at No. 8 Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Syracuse women's soccer team (2-1-1) came up just short as the Florida Gators (4-0-0) took Sunday night's contest, 2-1. Sophomore Sydney Brackett notched her third goal of the season for the Orange in the 23rd minute of the game.
"We played a team that had tremendous depth and is one of the top-ranked teams in the country," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "I'm really proud of our team because they didn't stop and kept fighting until the end."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Gators struck first on a penalty kick goal after 'Cuse took a handball in the box in the sixth minute of the game. Brackett tied the game for the Orange with a tap in off a cross pass to the front of the net from senior Alana O'Neill.
The game remained tied until the 56th minute when Parker Roberts just beat senior keeper Courtney Brosnan at the far post to put the Gators up, 2-1. Alex Lamontagne had a chance to tie it up for the Orange on a one-on-goal advance in the second half but the Gators' keeper just got a finger on the ball to deflect it wide of the net.
OF NOTE
Brackett scored her team-leading third goal of the season to bring her season points total to six, already surpassing her 2016 season points total (five). The sophomore paces the Orange in shots (11), goals (three) and points (six). O'Neill recorded her first assist of the season and sits in second on team for shots with eight.

COACH'S THOUGHTS
"I give our defenders a lot of credit. Jessica Vigna was fantastic tonight," said Wheddon. "We limited them to longer range shots and played pretty well inside the box."
UP NEXT…
The Orange return home to SU Soccer Stadium to host Cornell on Thursday night at 7 p.m. Admission to all home games is free.
