
Avant, O'Neill Named Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sean Avant of the football team and Alana O'Neill of the women's soccer team are this week's Syracuse Scholar-Athletes of the Week.
Avant is a graduate student, pursuing a master's in instructional design, development and evaluation. He earned his undergraduate degree in communication and rhetorical studies. Avant currently serves as an assistant to the director of academics, served as a mentor at this year's new student-athlete orientation and has volunteered in the University's athletic academic center. He is a three-time ACC Honor Roll member and has qualified for the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll five semesters.
A native of Miramar, Fla., Avant has played in 22 games over the course of his first three seasons with Syracuse. The wide receiver appeared in seven games during the 2016 campaign.
O'Neill is a senior, pursuing a double major in finance and entrepreneurship and emerging markets in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. She is a recipient of the Whitman Leadership Scholarship, a member of the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and spends time volunteering at the Samaritan Center, the Golisano Children's Hospital and the Latin School in Syracuse. She is a two-time ACC All-Academic Team selection, a three-time member of the ACC Honor Roll and has qualified for the SU Athletic Director's Honor in all six of her completed semesters.
The Chester, N.Y. native has started in all four women's soccer games this season and currently has one assist. The women's soccer team is 2-1-1 with wins over Bucknell and Army and a draw against nationally-ranked Connecticut.
Avant and the Syracuse football team open the 2017 season at home against Central Connecticut State Friday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the Carrier Dome. Season and single-game tickets are available online, by phone (888-DOMETIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).
O'Neill and the women's soccer team host Cornell Thursday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. and Fairfield Sunday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. Both games have free admission and will be played at the SU Soccer Stadium.
