SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A goal with 27 seconds remaining in the first half proved to be the game winner as No. 17/12 Louisville defeated No. 7/13 Syracuse, 2-1, in men's soccer action on Friday, Sept. 15. The loss is the Orange's first of the season and snaps Syracuse's 20-game unbeaten streak at the SU Soccer Stadium.
"These ACC games will all be tight matches," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "I think in the second half, we played some good soccer. I thought we brought a little more physicality in the second half and found some spaces. We just need that final quality cross and touch to be able to put it away."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
All of the scoring took place in the first half. The Orange (4-1-2, 0-1-1 ACC) took the early lead on a set piece when sophomore John-Austin Ricks scored on a header off a corner kick from junior Hugo Delhommelle in the 11th minute. The goal was Ricks' third of the season, which rank second on the team.
The Cardinals (4-1-1, 1-1 ACC) answered in the 31st minute on a set piece of their own. Adam Wilson served the ball into the box where it bounced off Cody Cochran in front of the goal. He collected the ball and fired a shot into the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1.
The go-ahead goal came in the 45th minute. The ball was played forward to Mohamed Thiaw, who worked against his defender and got off a perfectly placed shot from 20 yards out that hit the left corner of the goal.
OF NOTE
Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrick Hilpert made five saves, all in the first half, to keep the Orange within striking distance. Louisville outshot Syracuse, 11-3, in the first half, but recorded only one shot in the second half.
The match was played in front of a crowd of 2,006, which is the eighth-largest total in program history.
