The Orange enter the game with a 4-1-2 record after losing to No. 17/12 Louisville on Friday night. Cornell also lost its last game, a 2-1 setback against Canisius. The Big Red is now 1-3-1 this season.
RICKS STRIKES AGAIN
Sophomore John-Austin Ricks (Diablo, Calif.) scored Syracuse's goal in its 2-1 loss to Louisville. The goal was his third of the season and marked the second straight game in which he scored. As a freshman, Ricks had one goal in 17 matches. In seven games this season, he has three goals, which rank second on the team.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Sophomore George Pedlow leads the Big Red in scoring with four points on two goals. Freshman Harry Fuller and junior Walter Prince each have a goal and an assist for three points. Sophomore Ryan Shellow has started every match in goal for Cornell. He has a .474 save percentage and a 2.03 goals-against average.
Coach John Smith is in his second season at the helm of the Cornell program. Previously, he served as the associate head coach at Stanford and spent six seasons as head coach at Incarnate Word.
THE SERIES
Syracuse and Cornell will meet for the 70th time in a series that dates back to 1921. The Big Red own a 34-28-7 advantage in the series. While Cornell leads the all-time series, Syracuse has won eight of the last nine meetings. The squads played to a 1-1 tie in 2010 in Ithaca. The Big Red's last win against the Orange was in 2001.
Last season, the teams met in Ithaca. With the score tied at 1-1, Liam Callahan found the back of the net in the 51st minute to put the Orange up for good. Jonathan Hagman (Enebyberg, Sweden) added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute for the 3-1 final.
UP NEXT…
Syracuse concludes its four-game homestand on Friday, Sept. 22 when it hosts No. 23/16 Duke at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission and parking are free of charge.
