The No. 3 Syracuse field hockey team (8-1, 1-1 ACC) picked up their fourth win over a ranked opponent on Sunday, when 'Cuse downed No. 24 Rutgers (5-4), 4-0.
The win was the eighth shutout on the year for Syracuse, with Borg van der Velde making four saves in the win. Four different players found the back of the net, with three goals coming before halftime.
Roos Weers got the scoring started just 3:10 into action off a corner when she blasted a shot past Scarlet Knights' keeper Gianna Glatz. Florine Hogendoorn and Elaine Carey were credited with assists on the play.
Syracuse then used an offensive burst just before halftime to take a 3-0 lead into the break. Jennifer Bleakney drove all the way into the circle from just past the midfield line and rifled a hard shot into the top of the net for her fourth goal of the year, with 2:31 to play in the half.
Sarah Luby then put the Orange over the top with a deflection in front of the cage. Luby sprawled out to send a hard ball by Weers into the top corner of the net. That goal came with less than a minute on the clock before halfttime.
'Cuse tacked on one more late when Rutgers replaced their goalie with a kicking back and a Syracuse counter attack took advantage. Carolin Hoffmann sent a ball on to Chiara Gutsche, who buried her first collegiate goal.
The Orange will continue their home stand on Saturday, when the team hosts ACC rival North Carolina at 2 p.m.
