Orange Comeback Falls Short in OT
9/23/2017 6:59:00 PM | Field Hockey
Trailing 2-0 midway through the second half, the No. 6 Syracuse field hockey team (8-2, 1-2 ACC) rallied to force overtime against No. 7 North Carolina (8-2, 2-1 ACC). However, the Tar Heels scored 1:26 into the extra frame to come away with the win.
Syracuse scored with no time remaining in regulation after forcing a corner right before the horn. Syracuse sent every player forward on the ensuing attempts to force three-straight penalty corners. Finally, Syracuse struck when Lies Lagerweij's blast made it through traffic to knot the game at two.
However, UNC swung momentum back at the start of overtime, drawing the ball into the circle where Eva van't Hoog spun and scored the game winner.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 1-0 lead with zeros on the scoreboard in the first half. After drawing a penalty corner as time expired, Gab Major – who was the inserter on the play – floated to the near post after sending the ball on. She was in the right place to redirect Ashley Hoffman's shot and make it 1-0.
UNC again scored in the 52nd minute, when van't Hoog took a pass from Feline Guenther and fired a shot into the low, left corner of the cage.
Elaine Carey didn't let the lead get out of reach for long though. After forcing a Carolina turnover, Carey got behind the Tar Heel defense and Roos Weers found her with a long pass into the offensive end. Carey dribbled into the circle and pulled the Orange back to within one in the 54th minute, which allowed Syracuse to tie it later in the game.
Syracuse out-shot the Tar Heels 13-9, with nine of the Orange's shots finding their way on cage as opposed to UNC's five. 'Cuse also drew nine penalty corners compared to Carolina's three in the action.
Eight cards were handed out in the action as well in what was a physical battle.
Syracuse will next head to Louisville on Friday, for a 3:30 p.m. battle with the Cardinals.
