LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Syracuse sophomore wide receiver/kick returner Sean Riley was named to the Paul Hornung Award Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, Sept. 18 for his performance in the Orange's 41-17 win against Central Michigan. The honor roll recognizes college football players who demonstrate outstanding versatility each week.
Â
Riley racked up a career-high 247 all-purpose yards on 13 touches to help Syracuse defeat the Chippewas Saturday. He set career highs for both rushing (47) and receiving (82) yardage. Riley also tallied 98 yards on two kickoff returns and 20 yards on three punt returns.
Â
The 5-8, 155-pound speedster was responsible for some of the Orange's biggest plays of the game. Following a second-quarter touchdown that put the Chippewas ahead 17-10, Riley took the ensuing kickoff 64 yards up the sideline to set up an 18-yard touchdown pass from Eric Dungey to Dontae Strickland that tied the score.
Â
On the next Syracuse possession, Riley adjusted his route during a Dungey scramble and the duo hooked up on a 44-yard pass play down to the Central Michigan 9-yard line. The completion led to another Strickland touchdown that put Syracuse ahead to stay. Riley also had a 41-yard rush later in the game.
Â
For the season, Riley is sixth in the ACC in all-purpose yards per game (135.0). He leads the conference and ranks eighth nationally in average yards per kickoff return (34.7).
Â
The Paul Hornung Award is presented by Texas Roadhouse and is awarded annually by the Louisville Sports Commission to the most versatile player in major college football.
Riley was one of three ACC players recognized by the organization Monday. He was joined on this week's honor roll by Duke's Shaun Wilson, Virginia's Olamide Zaccheaus and Washington's Dante Pettis.
Â
Riley and the Orange return to action Saturday, Sept. 23 when they visit Death Valley for a 7 p.m. ET showdown with LSU in Tiger Stadium.
