
Yelin’s 550th Career Win Highlights First Day At K-State Invitational

Manhattan, Kan. – Syracuse women's volleyball head coach Leonid Yelin picked up his 550th career win as Syracuse defeated Kansas State 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-18) in the nightcap of day one at the Kansas State Invitational. The Orange (3-3) fell to Wisconsin 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-16) in the morning matchup.
With the win, Yelin becomes the 26th active head coach to reach the 550-victory milestone.
Wisconsin 3, Syracuse 0
Santita Ebangwese led 'Cuse with four kills and Jalissa Trotter contributed a team-high 14 assists in the loss to Wisconsin (4-0). Kelli Bates paced the Badgers with a match-high 12 kills and Sydney Hilley led all competitors with 34 assists.
Wisconsin came out strong in the first set and surged past the Orange, 25-9. 'Cuse trailed the Badgers 8-6 early in set two, but the Badgers went on a 16-5 run and won the set 25-14.
Syracuse fell behind 14-12 in the third set and Wisconsin outscored the Orange 11-4 to win, 25-16.
Syracuse 3, Kansas State 1
After dropping the first set to Kansas State (2-3), 'Cuse was able to win three straight sets and pull off the come from behind triumph. Ebangwese tied for a match-high 14 kills and led all competitors with seven block assists. Trotter chipped in a team-high 24 assists and Ella Saada led the Orange with 13 digs.
After being tied up at 14, K-State went on an 11-3 run to win the first set 25-17. Syracuse led for the majority of the second set and came away with a 25-18 victory.
The Orange led 22-21 in the third set, and used two Wildcat service errors and an Ebangwese kill to take the set, 25-22.
Kansas State trailed 18-14 in the fourth set and Orange closed the match on a 7-4 run, capped off by Annie Bozzo's ace to win, 25-18.
Coach's Thoughts
"We faced two really good teams today," said associate head coach Erin Little. "Wisconsin and Kansas State are great teams to matchup with in non-conference play because they can help us prepare to face teams that we will see in the ACC."
What's Next?
The Orange conclude play in the Kansas State Invitational on Sep. 2 against Arkansas at noon.
