SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team (5-3-1) came up just short against No. 18 Wake Forest (8-1-1) on Thursday as the Demon Deacons held onto a 1-0 lead to take the win. Senior keeper Courtney Brosnan tied her season-high with nine saves on the night for the Orange.
"I'm really proud of the team and how they responded in the second half," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "I give all our players a ton of credit because they adapted well and dealt with the opposition. We just know now that we can't take 15 or 20 minutes to get into the game."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The sole goal of the game came in the 30th minute of the match when a Wake Forest defender passed the ball into the box, allowing Hannah Betfort to sail the ball into the top left corner of the goal. Despite outshooting Wake Forest in the second half, 5-4, the Orange could not rally past the Demon Deacons.
OF NOTE
With nine saves in the game, Brosnan has surpassed the 275 saves mark, currently sitting at 278 saves in her career. She ranks third in program history for saves, just behind Eliza Bennett-Hattan (331) and Brittany Anghel (303).
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"We started four freshman so it was their first experience in the ACC, a kind of baptism by fire," said Wheddon. "We were playing against one of the top 20 teams in the country and they are in the top 20 for a reason. Having said that, I'm really proud of the way they played, especially Kailee Coonan and Mackenzie Vlachos in the midfield."
UP NEXT…
The Orange play their final game of the home stand against Clemson on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. The first 100 fans will receive orange pom-poms in recognition of youth day.
