‘Cuse Takes No. 19 Clemson to 0-0 Tie

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team (5-3-2, 0-1-1) recorded its second tie of the season as it took No. 19 Clemson (6-3-1, 0-2-1) to a 0-0 result (20T) on Sunday at SU Soccer Stadium. Both of the ties for the Orange this season have come against ranked opponents, as 'Cuse tied No. 21 Connecticut back in August.
"I thought we did a really good job of having our players pick and choose when to go forward," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "We knew that, because of the way that Clemson plays, we would be making several 70-yard runs back to our own goal. I thought the players did a great job of managing the environment."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Syracuse and Clemson combined for 25 total shots in the game with the keepers making five saves apiece. Seven different Orange players tabbed a shot in the game with freshmen Kate Hostage and Mackenzie Vlachos pacing Syracuse with two each.
The Tigers rallied in the first overtime period, tallying three shots in a three-minute span but the Orange defense stepped up, applying pressure on the Tigers and forcing less opportunities. Senior defender Jessica Vigna came up with several key blocks for the Orange to relieve pressure on Syracuse keeper Courtney Brosnan.
OF NOTE
Vlachos posted her first two-shot game as an Orange against Clemson, booting a pair of longer range shots, including her first career shot on goal.
This marks the second consecutive year that Syracuse has recorded two ties against ranked opponents. The Orange took both No. 2 Florida State and No. 20 Notre Dame to 1-1 ties during the 2016 campaign.
Brosnan has recorded 110 minutes in goal in a game seven times in her career. In those seven games, she has amassed 34 saves and posted a career-best 15 saves against Florida State last season. She ranks third in program history for career saves with 283.
UP NEXT…
The Orange hit the road for the first time in over month as they travel to North Carolina to take on the No. 8 Tar Heels on Sept. 30. Fans can follow along on ACC Network Extra with kickoff set for 12 p.m. ET.
