#7 Orange Fall to #12 Louisville in Second OT
9/29/2017 5:46:00 PM | Field Hockey
A goal off a penalty corner with no time remaining in regulation and a penalty stroke goal in the second overtime led No. 12 Louisville (7-4, 2-1 ACC) past No. 7 Syracuse (8-3, 1-3 ACC) 2-1 in two overtimes.
Laura Hurff's first half goal got Syracuse on the board just 3:18 into action on a shot from the top of the circle. The score would remain that way for the ensuing 67 minutes of action. However, the Cardinals were awarded a penalty corner in the waning seconds and Louisville's Madison Walsh deflected a shot into the back of the net to send the game to overtime.
After another 15 minutes without a score, Louisville was awarded another corner four minutes into the second overtime and capitalized again. This time the ball deflected off a Syracuse foot, when the Orange player was ruled to be the last line of defense in front of the net, thus resulting in a penalty stroke.
Taylor Stone managed to beat Borg van der Velde on the stroke and take the victory for Louisville.
The Cardinals out-shot the Orange 14-10 in the game, with van der Velde coming away with a career-best eight saves in the action.
Next, Syracuse will return home to face No. 16 Princeton at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
