SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange open ACC play on the road this weekend when they take on NC State Saturday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is at 12:20 p.m. and the game will air on the ACC Network. Syracuse looks to rebound after a 35-28 loss to LSU, during which the defense showed exceptional effort.
"It was a total defensive effort and I thought it was a fantastic game," said head coach Dino Babers. "You may not see that in the box score but, from a coach's standpoint, they were punching holes in the offense I thought, from a defensive standpoint, the inside players, the linebackers and the defensive line played a very aggressive game."
Â
The Orange defense limited the Tigers to just 10 total yards on 10 plays in the first quarter and finished the game with six tackles for loss and two sacks. Syracuse also intercepted a pass for the third week in a row. Senior Parris Bennett was named the ACC Linebacker of the Week after tallying a season-best 12 tackles, including a career-high three for loss, a safety, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry.
Â
Led by junior quarterback Eric Dungey, the Syracuse offense rallied in second half after falling behind the Tigers 21-3. Dungey accounted for two touchdowns, one rushing and one passing, in the game, to move into fifth in program history for the most touchdowns responsible for with 48. Wide receiver Steve Ishmael posted his fourth consecutive game with 100+ receiving yards and hauled in 22-yard touchdown pass that pulled the Orange to within two.
Â
"We went into one of the toughest venues there is to play a football game in and, at five minutes left, we were within three points of winning the game," said Babers "I think it's a tribute to where we came from and how hard we are working."
As Syracuse looks ahead to NC State, the Orange are preparing to contend with one of the top defenses in the nation. Led by star defensive end Bradley Chubb, the Wolfpack ranks 11th in the nation in rushing defense and is coming off a 27-21 upset win over No. 12 Florida State.
Â
"Their front seven is exceptional," said Babers. "If you try to do things to that front seven, you better be exactly right because if you're not, your success is going to be very limited."
