First Practice In The Books For 'Cuse Hoops
9/29/2017 12:32:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Men's basketball practice officially opened on Friday afternoon, Sept. 29, at the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center on campus. It marked the 42nd season-opening workout run by head coach Jim Boeheim at Syracuse.
Boeheim instructed a number of new faces at the initial practice session. Only one starter, sophomore guard Tyus Battle, is back in the fold. Junior guard Frank Howard, junior center Paschal Chukwu and redshirt freshman Matthew Moyer, a forward, represented the only other scholarship players back from the 2016-17 club.
The newcomers include graduate guard Geno Thorpe, a transfer guard from USF. Thorpe led the Bulls in scoring a season ago. Another transfer, sophomore guard Elijah Hughes, must sit out one year after transferring from East Carolina. Hughes, a guard, is permitted to practice this season and then will have three full campaigns of eligibility starting next year.
The freshman class features forward Oshae Brissett from Athlete Institute Prep (Ontario), forward Marek Dolezaj from Slovakia, forward Bourama Sidibe from St. Benedict's Prep (N.Y.) and another Athlete Institute Prep product in guard Howard Washington.
Boeheim ranks second behind Duke mentor Mike Krzyzewski on the all-time Division I win list.Â
Season and single-game tickets for 2017-18 are available for purchase online (www.cuse.com/tickets), by phone through Ticketmaster at 888-DOMETIX (888-366-3849) or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office.
