One lucky fan will win a Syracuse-Clemson prize pack
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Thirty years ago, the Syracuse football team made history by finishing the 1987 regular season with an 11-0 record and earning an invitation to the Sugar Bowl. This fall, Syracuse Athletics is celebrating the 30th anniversary of that legendary team by having fans vote for the top five plays from that remarkable season.
Â
Visit Cuse.com/87 to cast your ballot for the year's best plays and be automatically entered to win a Syracuse prize pack for the Orange's Oct. 13 game against defending national champion Clemson. The winner will receive four (4) suite tickets for Syracuse's matchup with the Tigers, as well as four (4) pre-game field passes, and four (4) passes for pre-game access to the Driver's Village tent on the Quad.
Â
The winner will be drawn the week leading up to Syracuse's Oct. 7 game against Pittsburgh. While Department of Athletics employees are encouraged to the vote for their favorite plays, they are not eligible to win.
Â
Led by national coach of the year Dick MacPherson, the 1987 Orange finished fourth in both the Associated Press and UPI Coaches Polls. Syracuse rolled through the competition, beating the likes of Penn State, Missouri, Navy, Virginia Tech, Boston College and West Virginia en route to a perfect regular season. In the Sugar Bowl against Auburn, Tigers coach Pat Dye elected to kick a 30-yard field goal in the final seconds instead of going for the end zone and the game ended in a 16-16 deadlock.
Â
A 1987 unanimous All-American, quarterback Don McPherson was one of six 1988 Syracuse NFL Draft selections. McPherson captained the team along with All-America defensive tackle Ted Gregory and defensive end Paul Frase. McPherson, who was the runner-up in the Heisman Trophy voting, set 22 school records that season and was the recipient of 18 national player of the year awards, including the Maxwell Award as the nation's best player, the Davey O'Brien Award's as the country's top quarterback, and the inaugural Johnny Unitas Award.
Â
More than 40 members of the '87 squad, including McPherson, will be in Syracuse this weekend for Saturday's game against Middle Tennessee. At the end of the first quarter, they will be invited onto the field and recognized for their accomplishments, including winning the 1987 Lambert Trophy as the No. 1 team in the East.
Â
Tickets for the Middle Tennessee game start at $25 and are available online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).
