'Cuse Takes on #3/3 Virginia Tuesday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Syracuse begins a stretch of back-to-back road games against nationally-ranked opponents when it travels to No. 3/3 Virginia on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Tip-off in JPJ Arena is scheduled for 8 p.m.
The game will be televised on ACC Network and on the Watch ESPN app. Fans can also listen to the live broadcast on the Syracuse IMG Radio Network.
For Starters
- Syracuse lost its fourth game of the season on a last-second bucket by Notre Dame on Saturday. The Orange enter Tuesday's matchup with a 12-4 overall record and a 1-2 mark in ACC play.
- Sophomore Tyus Battle is third in the ACC with 19.5 points per game. Battle has scored in double-figures in 15-of-16 games for the Orange. Junior Frank Howard (15.4 ppg.) and freshman Oshae Brissett (15.2 pgg.) also rank in the top 15 in the conference for scoring.
- Tuesday night's showdown features two of the top defenses in the country. Virginia ranks second nationally with a .359 field-goal percentage defense and Syracuse sits 11th with a .381 mark. The Cavaliers also possess the best scoring defense in the nation, allowing their opponents to just 52.5 points per contest. The Orange rank 17th with their opponents averaging 62.2 points per outing.
- Syracuse leads the all-time series over Virginia, 5-4, and has won the last two meetings. In 2016, the Orange overcame a 16-point second-half deficit in a 68-62 victory over the Cavaliers in the NCAA 'Elite 8'.
Scouting the Cavaliers
- Virginia (14-1, 3-0 ACC) has won its last six contests, including three ACC victories over Boston College, at Virginia Tech and versus North Carolina. The lone loss for the Cavaliers came at No. 2/2 West Virginia on Dec. 5.
- Kyle Guy and Devon Hall lead Virginia in scoring with 14.9 and 11.9 points per game, respectively. Guy, Hall and Ty Jerome all can shoot it from beyond the arc as each player has made at least 44 percent of their treys this season. Hall has a team-high 47 assists and Isaiah Wilkins leads Virginia with 7.3 rebounds per game.
- Tony Bennett is in his ninth season as head coach of the Cavaliers. Virginia has won 29 or more games in three of the last four seasons including a school-record tying 30 wins in 2014 and 2015. The Cavaliers captured back-to-back outright ACC regular-season titles in 2014 and 2015 and won the 2014 ACC Tournament title under Bennett.
