WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Syracuse placekicker Andre Szmyt was chosen as one of the three Lou Groza Award "Stars of the Week" on Monday, Oct. 1 for his performance against Clemson.
Â
The Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Award, which is presented by the Orange Bowl, recognizes three of the top FBS kickers each week. In addition to Szmyt, Bailey Hale of Louisiana Tech and Jared Sackett of UTSA earned the honor for Week 5 of the 2018 college football season. Â
Â
Szmyt connected on three field goals, including a career-long of 51 yards, in the Orange's 27-23 loss to the third-ranked Tigers in Death Valley.
Â
The honor is the latest for Szmyt, who was named the ACC's Specialist of the Week earlier Monday.
Â
Szmyt was responsible for 11 of the Orange's 23 points against the Tigers. He connected on field goals of 35, 51 and 32 yards in the opening half, as Syracuse took a 16-7 advantage into the break. Szmyt also made both of his PATs. His 51-yarder is the longest made field goal in the ACC so far this season.
Â
Szmyt's current average of 2.6 field goals per game leads the nation. He's made multiple kicks in every game this season and leads the FBS with 13 field goals. Szymt also leads the country in kick-scoring with 65 points.
