
Career Highs From Shemanova and Trotter Help Orange Defeat Miami

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A pair of career-highs from Polina Shemanova and Jalissa Trotter helped Syracuse defeat Miami, 3-1. Shemanova used a career-high 20 digs and 25 kills to record her eighth double-double of the season while Trotter put up 57 assists, the most for any Syracuse player since 2015. Her career-high moved her into eighth all-time at Syracuse with 2,148 career assists.
The Orange remain undefeated at home after recording their second-best hitting percentage of the season, .350. Syracuse defeated the Hurricanes by set scores of 24-26, 25-20, 25-15, 25-22.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Miami (9-5, 5-2 ACC) took a closely contested first set before Syracuse (10-5, 6-1 ACC) opened the second set with a 5-0 lead behind junior Aliah Bowllan's serve. The Hurricanes took advantage of three Syracuse errors to get on the board, 7-3, but the 'Cuse attack continued as Trotter and Ella Saada combined to add three more kills for an 11-4 lead. Miami attempted to erase the deficit with four-straight points before committing a service error that gave Syracuse a 14-10 lead. The Orange held their dominance, never relinquishing the lead, before using back-to-back kills from Shemanova and Saada to end the set.
A dominant third set .486 hitting percentage, led by five kills from Saada and Shemanova, helped push Syracuse past Miami for a 2-1 lead. The Hurricanes looked to mount a comeback in set four keeping it close 6-5 before a pair of attack errors gave the Orange a 9-5 lead. Syracuse quickly extended its lead to six, 13-7, with a block from Santita Ebangwese and Shemanova. A 5-0 run from Miami and a pair of Syracuse attack errors pulled the Hurricanes within striking distance, 20-22. Ebangwese responded with back-to-back kills before clinching the match with a set-ending block.
OF NOTE
As a team, Syracuse totaled 66 assists, the most for the Orange in a match since 2015. Ebangwese and Saada both added double-digit kills with 15 and 14, respectively. Additionally, Ebangwese recorded a game-high seven blocks.
