SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's soccer team celebrated the careers of senior forward Drina Domic and redshirt senior goaltender Jordan Harris Saturday night at SU Soccer Stadium, but could not complete Senior Night with a win, losing 5-1 against Atlantic Coast Conference foe Notre Dame.
The Orange are now 3-12-0 overall and 0-7-0 in ACC play.
"We took too long to get going," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "When we put [Notre Dame] under some pressure, they panicked a little bit. We made the decision at halftime that we were just going to come out and press them, which we did. I thought that it was working, I thought we had some good spells. We had to take some chances and had some chances, but we weren't able to finish the ones that we had."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Notre Dame opened the scoring with a goal in the fourth minute. The Fighting Irish led 1-0 throughout much of the first half until Karin Muya scored her first of two goals in the 44th minute, and Notre Dame entered the half up 2-0.
Junior midfielder Georgia Allen scored in the 72nd minute, cutting into the deficit and providing the Orange with some energy. Sophomore midfielder/forward Kate Hostage provided the assist on Allen's second goal of the year.
Before Syracuse could capitalize on the momentum, the Fighting Irish responded with a goal in the 78th minute to extend their lead to 3-1. Notre Dame tacked on two more goals in the final 10 minutes.
OF NOTE
Syracuse has scored in three consecutive ACC matches. The Orange scored three goals against NC State (Oct. 4) and once against North Carolina (Oct. 7).
Allen tallied a season-high two shots on goal while sophomore forward Kate Donovan had a team-leading three shots. Hostage's assist on Allen's goal was her second of the season.
Harris played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded six saves.
HEAR MORE FROM COACH WHEDDON
"Drina's someone who's done everything we've asked her to do. She is one of the best human beings you could have on your team. She's popular with everyone on the team, and she's going to go on to do some really great things. It's been great to have Drina with us."
"Jordan's obviously only been here for a few months, but she came in and has competed for the starting spot. She's been an instrumental part of the team. She's got great character, and she's brought a lot to the team in leadership on and off the field. She's been fantastic for us."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange start a two-game road trip, heading to Charlottesville to face Virginia Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. and Winston-Salem to play Wake Forest Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m.
