SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange are heading to Canada this December.
The Syracuse hockey team has finalized plans for a three-game exhibition series in Montreal, Quebec, over winter break, head coach Paul Flanagan announced Tuesday, Oct. 2. The Orange will compete in the Theresa Humes Invitational Dec. 28-30, playing exhibition games against three Canadian institutions - Nipissing, St. FX and host Concordia.
"We're making this a hockey, educational and cultural three-day trip," Flanagan said. "We've got a long winter break, and these exhibition games will hopefully get us back in shape before we hit the game against RPI and get back into conference play."
The Orange open the tournament Friday, Dec. 28 with a 7 p.m. game against Nipissing. Syracuse then faces St. FX at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29 before taking on Concordia at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30 to close out the trip.
"They're very good teams," Flanagan said. "These will be hard-fought contests. They're all well-coached programs, and the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) teams do very well. They have a lot of good players, so it should be a real good tune-up for us. Obviously, we go up there to win the tournament, but it gives us the opportunity to play everybody and not have the pressure of jumping right back in to league games."
The team will stay in downtown Montreal in close proximity to the Bell Centre, home of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens. The trip itinerary includes a number of cultural activities, such as tours of Old Montreal and the Underground City. The weekend allows the Orange to play hockey, bond as a team and see a new part of the world.
"It's always neat to get away from the sport and get away from school for a bit," Flanagan said. "It's a little relief from seeing each other at the rink. We try to do things that enhance their time here at Syracuse, and we're trying to do things above and beyond.
"It's going to be a real good bonding experience for us. I think on all accounts, this is a win-win."
The trip marks the first time the Orange have traveled across borders to play since the team's inaugural season. Flanagan took the Syracuse hockey team to Ottawa, Ontario, in the fall of 2008, playing exhibition games against Carleton University and the University of Ottawa.
The Orange also played an exhibition against McGill University in Montreal that same season.
