RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 24 Syracuse extended its unbeaten streak to six games after a 1-1 tie at No. 21 North Carolina State on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Orange led for much of the match, but the Wolfpack tied the game with 24 seconds remaining in regulation.
Â
"This one stings a little, giving up a goal so late in the game," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "I thought our guys were terrific tonight to come on the road and put in that performance and that intensity. We're disappointed not to get three points. We certainly had our chances to secure the second goal, but credit to NC State, who found a way to score on a terrific free kick. I thought our guys showed character and resolve to make sure we got something out of the game after giving up the late goal. I'm very proud of our group. To get points on the road in the ACC is a job well done."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Wolfpack (8-4-3, 2-3-2) had the first scoring chance of the game when they were awarded a corner kick 57 seconds into the match. Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made one of his five saves and only stop of the first half on David Norris' header.
Â
The Orange (7-4-3, 1-3-2) earned their first corner kick in the fifth minute and didn't waste the opportunity. Senior Hugo Delhommelle served the ball into the box where sophomore Sondre Norheim headed the ball into the back of the net to give Syracuse a 1-0 advantage. It was Norheim's third goal in the last two games and fifth of the season.
Â
Syracuse continued to apply pressure as it outshot NC State, 9-2, in the first half. One of those shots, an attempt by freshman Ryan Raposo, went off the post in the 32nd minute. Leon Krapf made four saves to limit the damage for North Carolina State as the Orange led 1-0 at intermission.
Â
Neither team could find the back of the net again until the 89th minute. A foul outside the box gave North Carolina State a free kick and Brad Sweeney hit the top corner of the net for the equalizer, sending the match to overtime.
Â
Each goalkeeper made one save in the first overtime session, and Syracuse put one shot on frame in the second overtime as the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
