SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse had its six-game unbeaten streak snapped in a 3-2 setback at Clemson on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The Orange move to 7-5-3 overall and stand at 1-4-2 in the ACC heading into the regular-season finale on Friday, Oct. 26.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Clemson took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Tanner Dieterich scored off a penalty kick. the Tigers extended their lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute with a low Robbie Robinson shot from outside the box. The score held into halftime.
The Orange did not give into the Tigers' pressure, ending the first half even at shots with four. One of those shots, an attempt by junior Massimo Ferrin in the 35th minute, was the only save of the half for Clemson's keeper George Marks.
After the break, a Tigers' foul earned Syracuse a corner kick, giving 'Cuse the opportunity it needed to shorten Clemson's lead. Senior Hugo Delhommelle served the ball into the box where graduate student Len Zeugner headed it into the back of the net, reducing Clemson's advantage to 2-1.
Clemson went back on top by two when Adrian Nunez dribbled up the field and scored inside the box off a counter attack. Two minutes later, the Orange stormed down the field and cut the Tigers' lead to 3-2 with a goal from Ferrin into the top of the net.
An opportunity to tie the game came with less than 30 seconds to play, as Ferrin aimed a shot to the back of the net, but punched it in too high. The Orange outshot the Tigers 9-1 and had a 5-0 advantage in corners in the second half.
"It's hard to get wins on the road in the ACC," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "I thought we were a little sloppy in the first half. But our response in the second half was excellent. We'll regroup and get ready for Friday's game."
UP NEXT
'Cuse returns to action Friday, Oct. 26 for its final home game of the regular season when it takes on Boston College at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for a Senior Night presentation prior to the match. Admission and parking are free.
