CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Jalissa Trotter recorded a pair of season-highs Sunday afternoon to help lead the Syracuse volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Virginia. She recorded six kills on seven attacks for a .857 hitting percentage while adding a season and game-high 15 digs.
The Orange, who have won six of their last seven matches, defeated Virginia by set scores of 26-24, 25-23 and 25-21.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse (9-5, 5-1 ACC) opened the first set with a 6-3 lead before Virginia (5-11, 1-5 ACC) recorded five unanswered points. Back-to-back blocks from Amber Witherspoon and Mariia Levanova tied the match at 11, but a 6-1 run from Virginia kept the Cavaliers ahead 16-13. Virginia continued to hold the lead until a block from Witherspoon and Levanova tied the set at 22-22. Trotter laid down a kill to put the Orange up 25-24 before Polina Shemanova closed out the set with a kill of her own.
Virginia came out strong to open the second set with a 6-1 lead. A kill from Shemanova looked to start the Orange's offensive attack but three-straight kills from Virginia kept the Cavaliers ahead 9-2. Syracuse battled back moving the score to 10-6 and then forced back-to-back errors that allowed Yuliia Yastrub to tie the set, 13-13, with a service ace. Virginia quickly took back a 17-13 lead. The Orange answered with a 5-0 run that included back-to-back-kills from Trotter. The 18-17 lead was the first of the set for Syracuse as the Orange narrowly outscored Virginia 8-7 to close out the set.
Early kills from Shemanova and Ebangwese helped give the Orange an 8-5 lead in the third set. Virginia tied it, 8-8, once again with a kill and a pair of blocks. Syracuse held onto a narrow 12-9 lead before a trio of Orange errors pushed Virginia ahead 13-12. The set remained tied at 16-16 until Syracuse distanced themselves, 19-16, with three-straight points. Despite Virginia remaining close, 23-21, two kills from Witherspoon and Lukacs secured the match victory.
