SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Start spreading the news, the Orange are headed to New York City.
Syracuse makes its ninth trip to Yankee Stadium Saturday, Nov. 17, when the No. 12 Orange face No. 3 Notre Dame (10-0) in their penultimate regular-season contest. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally on NBC.
The Orange's climb up the national polls continued for a third straight week after an emphatic 54-23 win versus Louisville Friday night. Syracuse checked in at No. 12 in both the Associated Press Top 25 poll and Amway Coaches Poll, its highest AP ranking since being ranked No. 11 on Sept. 28, 1998.Â
And Syracuse has no interest in stopping there. The focus has been on putting together the best second half of the season that it could and the team has responded by going 4-0 since its bye week. Now for head coach Dino Babers and the Orange, it's a matchup against the storied Fighting Irish in one of the country's most recognizable venues.
"They're the nation's team,'" Babers said of Notre Dame in his weekly press conference inside the Iocolano-Petty Football Complex Monday morning. "It seems like no matter whether you're playing on the East Coast or the West Coast, you run out there and you're like, 'How did they get so many people?' [Their fans] seem to travel wherever they go, and they're going to be loud."
Fortunately for Syracuse, Yankee Stadium isn't unchartered territory. The Orange are 7-1, including a 2-0 record at the new stadium, all-time in the Bronx, having won four in a row at the venue dating back to their 1963 Thanksgiving triumph over Notre Dame at the old ballpark.
"If you get two really good teams that are motivated, they'll play anywhere," Babers said. "It's cool that we're in the state of New York and we may have some fans out there. We need [them] to come out and be loud. We need to be proud and be wearing our colors because I'm sure [Notre Dame] will have their numbers there."
As if preparing to be the road team at neutral site isn't enough, Syracuse will have to contend with one of the top teams in all of college football. The Irish ran its record to 10-0 by defeating Florida State 42-13 last weekend. Even without starting quarterback Ian Book Notre Dame controlled the game from the outset and never let the Seminoles get going.
"We're looking for a hole and looking for a weakness," Babers said. "They're extremely solid. The players that they're playing with on defense are really good. They're really long, and they have a really good scheme.
"The offense is so good that if you try to match suit with them before you know it, you're behind, the floodgates open and then the game's over."
