Climbing Higher: Syracuse Athletics Records Highest GSR in History
11/14/2018 5:09:00 PM | General, Academics
Syracuse University Athletics continues to set records in academics. The NCAA announced 2018 Graduation Success Rates (GSR) today and Syracuse has its highest GSR in school history – 92%. The measurement reflects the entering freshman class in 2011-12 and those who graduated within six years. The NCAA started measuring the GSR, which also includes those who entered midyear, as well as student-athletes who transferred into the institution, in 2004.
Â
"These results are really special," said Rick Burton, the David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management and Syracuse University's Faculty Athletics Representative to the ACC and NCAA. Â "It shows that Chancellor Syverud's vision of how our student-athletes can optimize the great academic opportunities at Syracuse is possible. It also demonstrates that Athletics Director John Wildhack and the coaching staffs are fully on board with supporting Assistant Provost Tommy Powell in prioritizing academic success and an orientation toward career success after graduation. The entire Syracuse community should be so proud of how these student-athletes are achieving in the classroom."
Â
Syracuse's 92% GSR is above the national GSR of 88% and ties for 12th among Power 5 schools. Syracuse is one of eight Atlantic Coast Conference schools ranked in the top 12 of the Power 5 schools this year.
Â
"It is such an exciting year for Syracuse University athletics – we are experiencing success on the field with multiple teams ranked in the Top 25 and reaping the benefits of hard work in the classroom reflected in this record-setting GSR score," said Assistant Provost for Student-Athlete Academic Development. The 92% GSR is a credit to the effort and focus of the student-athletes and the manner in which they are supported by the University and the Athletics Department in all areas of their development."
Â
The 2018 score marks the fifth time in the 15-year history of the GSR that at least seven Orange teams have posted a perfect 100% GSR.
Â
The NCAA instituted the GSR to more accurately reflect the mobility of college students as compared to the Federal Graduation Rate. The federal rate counts any student who leaves a school as an academic failure, whether or not the student enrolls at another school. The federal rate also does not consider students who enter as transfer students.
Â
The GSR formula provides a more complete and accurate picture by removing from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and including student-athletes who transfer to a school after being enrolled at another university.
Â
The release of the GSR and the Federal Graduation Rate follow last spring's announcement of the impressive success of student-athletes as reflected in the University's Academic Progress Rate.
