SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior quarterback Eric Dungey, redshirt senior defensive lineman Chris Slayton and redshirt junior punter Sterling Hofrichter have been elected team captains for the 2018 season, Syracuse head football coach Dino Babers announced today. The trio was elected in a recent team vote.
Â
"Eric, Chris and Sterling have carried themselves the right way both on and off the football field," Babers said. "Their consistency and their commitment to bringing the younger players along have put us in a position to achieve some things that haven't been done here in a long time." Â
Â
For Dungey (offense) and Hofrichter (special teams), it's the second year in a row they've been elected captain of their respective units. Prior to the vote, captains rotated on a weekly basis for the first nine games.
Â
One most productive quarterbacks in the nation, Dungey has completed 169-of-276 (.612) passes for 2,001 yards with 13 touchdowns this season. He's also the team's leading rusher with 628 yards and 10 scores on 131 carries. The Lake Oswego, Ore. native ranks 18th nationally in total offense per game (292.1) and 19th in points responsible for (138).
Â
Dungey is one of 15 remaining candidates for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award®, presented to the nation's top senior quarterback. He owns or shares 16 school records, and earlier this year became the eighth quarterback in Atlantic Coast Conference history to eclipse 10,000 career yards of total offense (10,340).
Â
Slayton is the anchor of Syracuse's defensive line. The 6-4, 309-pound tackle routinely works against double teams and has recorded 13 tackles this season, including 5.5 for losses, and two sacks. Slayton is the Orange's active leader in games played (45), starts (38), tackles for loss (30), and fumbles forced (4).
Â
Hofrichter was voted a USA Today Second Team Midseason All-American last month. He is second in the ACC in punting average (44.0) and he's tied with Duke's Austin Parker for the conference lead with 20 punts downed inside the 20-yard line. Hofrichter has kicked 48 times this season for 2,114 yards with only three touchbacks. Fourteen of his punts have traveled at least 50 yards.
Â
Syracuse is 7-2 and ranked No. 13 in both national polls this week. The Orange's No. 13 ranking is their highest in the Associated Press Top 25 since they were slotted 11th in the poll released on Sept. 28, 1998.
Â
The Orange return to the field Friday, Nov. 9 when they host Louisville in the final home game of the season. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
Â
Before the game, the 2018 Orange seniors will be recognized in a brief ceremony. In addition, fans are encouraged to remain in the Carrier Dome postgame for the "Senior Walk" in which members of this year's outgoing class take one final lap around the field.
Â
Tickets to watch the Orange and Cardinals start at $35 and are available online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).Â
