SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In what was billed as the 'Battle of the Boeheims,' it was the Orange's Boeheim duo that emerged victorious.
Syracuse (7-2), spurred by Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett's hot hands, overcame a five-point, first-half deficit and a 26-point scoring effort from Cornell's Matt Morgan, grinding out a 63-55 win against the Big Red (4-4) Saturday night at the Carrier Dome.
Battle poured in a season-high 26 points, knocking down four-three pointers in the process. Brissett, meanwhile, finished the night with 19 points on a 5-of-8 shooting performance. Eleven of his 19 points came in the final eight minutes of the first half, when he ignited a 19-5 Syracuse scoring run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing Cornell by five more than midway through first half, Syracuse used the 19-5 run to enter the intermission with a nine-point lead. The Orange shot 6-of-8 from the field, including 2-of-2 from three-point territory, and were perfect from the charity stripe over those final eight minutes to spark the point swing.
While that lead evaporated after a 21-8 second-half run gave Cornell a one-point advantage with 7:53 left to play in regulation, Battle delivered the bucket that put the Orange up for good. The junior guard's three-pointer with 5:51 left gave Syracuse a 52-50 lead, and the Orange never looked back.
Syracuse closed the game on an 11-5 run following Battle's make, shooting 4-of-4 from the field as a team during the hot streak to seal a 63-55 victory.
THE BOEHEIM FAMILY REUNION
Saturday's night contest pitted Boeheim and Boeheim vs. Boeheim.
Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim and son Buddy Boeheim, a freshman guard on the Orange, went head-to-head against the eldest Boeheim son, Jimmy, a sophomore guard at Cornell.Â
Buddy scored three points in five minutes of action, hitting one of his two three-point attempts. Jimmy, meanwhile, opened the game perfect from the field. He scored five points on 2-of-2 shooting, connected on a three-point attempt and pulled down three rebounds in the early minutes of the first half.
Jimmy finished with 9 points (3-of-9), six rebounds and four assists in 27 minutes.
