Syracuse University freshman Alexis Kaiser has been selected as a member for the Israeli National Softball Team. Kaiser will join the rest of the national team for the 2019 European Championships in hopes of qualifying Israel to the 2020 Olympics.
Â
Kaiser, a Tucson, Ariz. native, enters her freshman season at Syracuse following an accomplished high school career where she helped Canyon Del Oro to the 2017 4A State Championship. Kaiser was also a first team All-State selection. She looks to contribute as a catcher and offensive threat for the Orange in 2019.
Â
"I was already excited going into my first year of college and now I get to continue my season traveling around the world," Kaiser said. "It has always been a dream of mine to be an Olympic athlete, and this gives me a chance to do so, representing the country of Israel and doing what I love."
Â
Softball Israel first began play in 2001 and made its World Championship debut in 2016. Softball seeks to become the first team sport from Israel to qualify for an Olympic Games since 1968.
Â
Stacy Iveson, Arizona Softball's Director of Operations, has been tabbed as the head coach of the team for the 2019 European Championships. Assisting Iveson with coaching duties is Lisa Bernstein and Cal Lutheran Head Coach Debby Day. To compete for Israel, athletes must have at least one parent or grandparent and must travel to Israel to receive dual citizenship.
Â
Syracuse softball kicks off its 2019 campaign Feb. 8-10 at the Grand Canyon Kickoff Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. The full 2019 schedule can be found here.
