COLUMBUS, Ohio – Syracuse kicker Andre Szmyt has been named the winner of the 2018 Vlade Award, presented annually by the Touchdown Club of Columbus to college football's most accurate kicker. The award is named for former Ohio State kicker Vlade Janakievski, who was one of the most accurate placekickers in Buckeye football history.
A 6-1, 195-pound redshirt freshman, Szmyt leads the FBS in field goals made (28), field goals attempted (32), field goals per game (2.33), and points per game (11.8). He is second in the nation in scoring (141 points) and tied for eighth in the FBS in field-goal percentage (.875). His 141 points are a Syracuse record and rank third on the Atlantic Coast Conference single-season scoring list.
Szmyt, an All-ACC First Team honoree and a Lou Groza Award finalist, is 21-for-22 from inside 40 yards and 3-for-3 from beyond 50 yards, including a career-long kick of 54 yards at Pittsburgh. He has also made all 57 of his point-after attempts this season.
Szmyt's 28 field goals are the Syracuse and ACC single-season record. He is within striking distance of the all-time FBS mark of 31 field goals set by Georgia's Billy Bennett in 2003.
The 2018 Vlade Award will be presented during the 64th Touchdown Club of Columbus Awards Saturday, Feb. 9 at Express Live! in the city's Arena District.
