Robinson, Atlanta United Ready for MLS Cup Final
12/7/2018 10:41:00 AM | Men's Soccer
Former Syracuse defender Miles Robinson came in as support as Atlanta United clinched a spot in the MLS Cup Finals. The finals berth is the first for the club in just its second season. Robinson came in off the bench in the second leg of the Eastern Conference Finals as Atlanta United defeated the NY Red Bulls, 3-1.
Â
Robinson was moved back to his support role as Jeff Larentowicz recovered from his injury. He had been given a role in the starting XI during the Eastern Conference Semifinals after Larentowicz was sidelined with an injury. Robinson was the first-ever draft pick of Atlanta United, as he was selected with the second-overall pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.
Â
Robinson has played in 10 games this season, with three of those appearances being starts. He made his MLS debut against Los Angeles in April, where he recorded a shot on goal.
Â
The Arlington, Mass. native played for the Orange for two years before signing a Generation adidas contract after his sophomore season. He was a semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Award as well as a first-team All-American in 2016. Robinson was voted the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Defensive Player of the Year and was a first-team All-ACC selection.
Â
Next up for Atlanta is an MLS Cup showdown against the Portland Timbers. The teams met once during the regular season, and after the dust settled, the teams walked away with a 1-1 draw. Atlanta is led by Josef Martinez, the league's 2018 MVP.
Â
Portland finished fifth in the Western Conference with a 34-15-10 mark for the year. The team, led by Diego Valeri (10 G, 12 A), defeated FC Dallas, the Seattle Sounders FC, and Sporting Kansas City before reaching the MLS Cup Finals.
Â
The MLS Cup final will be played on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 8 p.m. at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The game will be televised on FOX.
