Rudy Hackett will receive the prestigious Vic Hanson Medal of Excellence Award at the 47th annual Syracuse University Men's Basketball Hardwood Banquet on Sunday, March 4. Â
Proceeds benefit the Conrad McRae Endowed Men's Basketball Scholarship and the men's basketball program.Â
Hackett was a key member of Syracuse squads that started a string of annual marches into the postseason. The Orange earned spots in the NCAA Tournament in each of his three varsity seasons, a run that was capped by the program's march to the 1974-75 Final Four.
He averaged 12.1 points and 9.7 rebounds per game while starting all 29 outings as a sophomore in 1972-73. Syracuse defeated Furman in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Maryland. The Orange finished the campaign with a 24-5 mark.
His numbers jumped the following year. Hackett produced 16.8 points and 11.7 rebounds per outing and the Orange earned a second straight NCAA berth. Syracuse ended up 19-7 in 1973-74.
Things came together for the Orange in Hackett's senior season and he played a leading role. Syracuse used NCAA Tournament victories against La Salle, #6 North Carolina and #17 Kansas State to reach the Final Four in San Diego. The Orange lost to #2 Kentucky in the semifinal and completed the campaign 23-9. Hackett averaged 22.2 points and 12.7 rebounds a game and surpassed 1,000 career points.
Hackett earned 1975 Associated Press Second Team All-American honors and was a third-team Basketball Weekly All-American.
He was selected in the third round as the 37th overall pick in the 1975 NBA draft by the New Orleans Jazz. Hackett signed with the Spirits of St. Louis in the American Basketball Association and then had short stints with the New York Nets and Indiana Pacers in 1976-77.
He also played professionally overseas.
