
Three Honored With ACC Postgrad Scholarships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three Syracuse student-athletes are being recognized for their academic and athletic achievements with Weaver-James-Corrigan Award post-graduate scholarships from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The list of honorees, which was announced by the league on Wednesday, Feb. 28, includes Pat Castle (Men's Soccer), Stephanie Grossi (Ice Hockey) and Laura Hurff (Field Hockey).

The Weaver-James-Corrigan and Jim and Pat Thacker postgraduate scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient will receive $5,000 toward his or her graduate education. Those honored have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.

Castle serves as president of Syracuse's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and earned the Award for Excellence by a Student Organization President. The Schuylerville, N.Y. native made his first career start against Northwestern this season and played 39:41 before suffering a season-ending injury. Â The biotechnology major has been a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester.

A senior from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Grossi is majoring in biochemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences. She is an active member of the Syracuse University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Grossi is a three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and has qualified for the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll in all six of her completed semesters. Â A four-year member of the Orange ice hockey team and this year's captain, Grossi is the program's all-time scoring leader, accumulating 114 career points (44 goals, 70 assists) during her time with the Orange. She leads the program in career assists at 70 and ranks second in career goals with 44. She is a two-time All-CHA First Team member and earned the CHA Scoring Trophy during her sophomore season.

Hurff is a three-time NFHCA All-American and All-Mideast Region honoree. She started all 18 games as a senior and recorded 16 points on five goals and six assists. Hurff recently played her first cap with the U.S. women's national team. She is a four-time member of the ACC All-Academic Team and three-time NFHCA All-Academic Team honoree. The Newark, Del. Native is majoring in health and exercise science.

The student-athletes will be honored at the annual Cone Health ACC Postgraduate Scholarship Luncheon presented by ESPN on April 11. The luncheon will be hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club at the Sheraton Four Seasons Hotel Imperial Ballroom in Greensboro.
