'Cuse Topped by #2 Virginia

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Tyus Battle led Syracuse (15-8, 4-6 ACC) with 15 points in a 59-44 loss to No. 2 Virginia (22-1, 11-0 ACC) Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome.
Junior Frank Howard finished with 11 points and freshmen Oshae Brissett and Marek Dolezaj each scored nine points. Dolezaj added seven rebounds.
De'Andre Hunter paced Virginia with 15 points and six assists. Kyle Guy added 14 points and Mamadi Diakite totaled 12 points.
How it was Decided
A Brissett layup trimmed the Syracuse deficit to 11 with 2:46 remaining. Back-to-back dunks from Diakite put the game out of reach for the Orange.
Game Summary
A 3-pointer from Brissett tied the game at 11 with 11:38 to play in the first half but Virginia answered with a Hunter jumper. Howard followed with a floater and the Cavaliers scored five-straight to go up 18-13. A Howard trey, followed by a Virginia jumper and a Battle bucket pulled the Orange back within two.
An 11-0 run gave the Cavaliers a 31-18 lead with 1:29 remaining in the half. Battle knocked down a 3-pointer to pull Syracuse within 10 at halftime.
Dolezaj opened up the second half with a dunk and Virginia answered with five-straight points to take a 36-23 advantage. Dolezaj made a jumper and Howard added a dunk to pull the Orange back within nine. The Cavaliers responded with a 12-0 run to take a 48-27 lead with 9:06 to go.
Howard made a layup and Battle connected on a 3-pointer to trim the Syracuse deficit to 13 with 5:01 remaining. Hunter converted a 3-point play and the Orange answered with five-straight points to pull within 11.
Numbers of Note
Virginia shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the field and held Syracuse to 33.3 percent (17-of-51). The Orange recorded their lowest scoring output in program history at the Carrier Dome. Georgetown previously held Syracuse to 46 points in the Dome in 2013.
The Cavaliers held a 35-26 advantage in rebounds and outscored the Orange 27-0 in bench points.
For the second straight game, three Orange players played all 40 minutes. In both games it has been Battle, Brissett and Howard going the distance.

Syracuse faces a quick turnaround when it heads to Louisville on Monday, Feb. 4. Tip-off in the KFC Yum! Center is at 7 p.m.
