SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Three high school football players signed National Letters of Intent with Syracuse University on Wednesday, Feb. 7. Running back Akeem Dixon, running back Jarveon Howard and defensive lineman Caleb Okechukwu all inked with the Orange today, rounding out the program's 2018 signing class.
Â
Today's additions raise the number of 2018 Syracuse signees to 18, the majority of whom signed in December during the NCAA's first early-signing period for college football.
Â
"We did a nice job finishing out the 2018 class," Orange head coach Dino Babers said. "Kudos to the staff. They did a fantastic job. You're doing a lot of recruiting at the back end of the season, which is not what every football coach wants, but you have to find a way to balance those two things because that's part of the job. I thought those guys (the assistant coaches) did a nice job handling all that."
Â
Dixon and Howard are both ranked among the top 100 running backs in the class, according to the major recruiting services. Dixon starred at Florida's Vero Beach high school where he racked up more than 4,000 career all-purpose yards and 59 touchdowns. Howard, a Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC) Class 1A All-State choice, rushed for 1,508 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior at East Marion High.
Â
An Under Armour All-American, Okechukwu recorded 80 tackles, including 35 for a loss, and 15 sacks as a senior for Washington, D.C. area power St. John's College High School.
Overall, Syracuse's incoming class is made up of four wide receivers, three linebackers, three offensive linemen, three defensive backs, two running backs, one quarterback, one tight end and one defensive lineman. Nine states and the District of Columbia are represented, with four players coming from New York, three from Florida, three from Washington, D.C., two from Texas and one each from Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington and Mississippi.
Â
Currently, the class is ranked in the top 50 by the recruiting website 247Sports.com (No. 49) and ESPN (No. 50).
Â
Three players – WR Ed Hendrix, OL Qadir White and DB Trill Williams – earned four stars from one of the major recruiting services. Williams (No. 174) and White (No. 187) are among 247Sports.com's list of the nation's top 247 prospects.
Â
Of the 18 signees, five are on campus and enrolled for the spring semester. They are: QB Chance Amie, DB Andre Cisco, DB Cam Jonas, LB Juan Wallace and LB Lakiem Williams.
Â
Syracuse returns 43 letterwinners, including 16Â starters (8 offense, 7 defense, 1 specialist), from last season. The Orange open spring practice next month.
Â
Season tickets for 2018 are on sale now and include home games against Wagner, Connecticut, Florida State, Louisville, North Carolina and NC State. Tickets start at $125 and they are available online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).
