SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Former Orange punter Rob Long and the Syracuse chapter of Uplifting Athletes are two of the four Syracuse University 2018 Orange Circle Award winners.
Â
Part of the University's Forever Orange Week, the Orange Circle Award recognizes altruistic members of the SU community who have done extraordinary things in the service of others. It honors Syracuse individuals – including students, faculty, staff, and alumni – who go above and beyond in their daily lives and who possess a deep responsibility for extraordinary acts that better society. These are not limited to financial support, but also include volunteerism.
Â
Long and Uplifting Athletes, along with student groups Nanhi Kali and The Shaped Clay Society, will be presented with their awards Thursday, March 29 at 5 p.m. in Rooms 304 ABC of the Schine Student Center. The event is free and open to all students, faculty and staff.
Â
In addition, Long is the featured speaker for the seventh annual Phanstiel Lecture. He will share his story and why he chooses to stay involved and give back.
Â
A four-year letterwinner (2007-10), Long currently serves as the director of strategic development for Uplifting Athletes, a national nonprofit that uses college football as a platform to inspire hope in the rare-disease community. He works to raise money and awareness for rare-disease research and patient-focused programs.
Â
Long was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer during his senior season and served as the inspiration behind former teammate Sam Rodgers starting an Uplifting Athletes chapter at Syracuse in 2013. A three-time All-BIG EAST selection, Long is second in program history in career punting average (43.3) and yardage (11,381).
Â
The Syracuse chapter of Uplifting Athletes held its fifth annual "Lift for Life" in the summer of 2017. Led by president Zack Mahoney, the chapter raised more than $11,000 to benefit the rare-disease community, while competing in events such as a wheelbarrow race, tire flips, figure-eight relays and a medicine ball toss.
