'Cuse Falls to Hopkins
3/10/2018 4:02:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
The No. 7 Syracuse men's lacrosse team (3-2, 1-0 ACC) fell behind early and was unable to get the momentum to mount another second half comeback on Saturday, falling 18-7 to No. 15 Johns Hopkins (3-2).
Jamie Trimboli netted a hat trick, while David Lipka notched his second multi-goal effort in three games. Dom Madonna made 10 saves in net for the Orange as well.
"Credit to Johns Hopkins, the game starts on the faceoff and they were very good there," said head coach John Desko. "They were good defensively, their goalie made saves and at the second period especially, their offense started to get going and understand spacing. We gave them a number of looks right in front of the goal, which you can't do, especially against this team. I thought they played a really good game."
The Blue Jays jumped out to a three-goal lead early, with Brendan Curry and Trimboli answering right back to close the the gap to one with 10:50 left before halftime.
The rest of the second is where the game began to get away, with Hopkins scoring four unanswered goals, capped by Cole Williams' tally with four seconds left to give the Blue Jays a 7-2 lead heading into the locker room.
After trading goals, with Alex Concannon and Lipka each scoring to start the third, it was another five-goal run from Johns Hopkins that effectively put the game away.
Shack Stanwick and Williams led the scoring for JHU, with five points apiece, and Brock Turnbaugh made 10 saves in net as well.
The Blue Jays out-shot the Orange 46-25 on the day and won the ground-ball battle 38-22. Hopkins also won 18-of-28 faceoffs, led by 17-of-26 from Hunter Moreland.
Next, Syracuse will regroup and travel to Rutgers on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.
