DAYTON, Ohio – Freshman Oshae Brissett recorded his 13th double-double of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead Syracuse (21-13) to a 60-56 victory over Arizona State (20-12) Wednesday night in the NCAA First Four. The Orange overcame a seven-point deficit with 7:05 to play.
Syracuse will travel to Detroit, Mich. on Friday, Mar. 16 to take on sixth-seeded TCU at 9:40 p.m. on CBS.
Sophomore Tyus Battle scored 15 points and junior Frank Howard added 12. Junior Paschal Chukwu totaled five points and nine rebounds.
How it was Decided
Battle drained a 3-pointer with 1:51 to go that gave Syracuse a 55-52 lead. Arizona State cut the Orange advantage down to one with 15 seconds to play, but Chukwu hit a free throw and Howard hit two more to seal the victory.
Game Summary
Howard scored eight straight points for Syracuse to help it jump out to a 10-7 lead. Later in the half a 3-pointer from Battle gave the Orange a five-point advantage. Arizona State answered with a 7-1 run later in the half to pull ahead 23-22.
Marek Dolezaj made a jumper and Brissett added two free throws to help Syracuse retake the lead. The Sun Devils tied the game at 28 and a late jumper from Dolezaj sent the Orange into halftime up 30-28.
Arizona State opened up the second half with an 8-0 run and took a six-point lead. Brissett scored four points to power a 7-2 run that pulled Syracuse back within one. The Sun Devils increased their lead back to five. A Brissett 3-pointer trimmed the Orange deficit down to two, but the Arizona State scored five-straight to take a 49-42 lead with 7:05 to go.
Howard made a jumper, Brissett made a free throw, Chukwu dunked and Brissett converted a 3-point play to fuel an 8-0 run to give the Orange its first lead of the half. The Sun Devils answered back with a trey to take a 52-50 lead with 4:02 remaining. Brissett hit a step-back jumper to tie the game once again.
Syracuse finished the game 20-of-49 (.408) from the field and held Arizona State to 21-of-52 (.404) shooting. The Orange held a 37-34 advantage on the glass and outscored the Sun Devils, 15-4, in points off turnovers.
Brissett shot 7-of-15 from the floor, 3-of-8 from beyond the arc and added six free throws. He scored 15 of the last 30 points for the Orange.
The game consisted of five ties and eight lead changes. Each team led for at least 17 minutes during regulation.
