
Whitner, Fernandez Named Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Kielan Whitner of the football team and Sammy Fernandez of the softball team have been named this week's scholar-athletes of the week.
Whitner is a senior from Lawrenceville, Georgia pursuing a degree in accounting. He is a two-time member of the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll and has been tabbed to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in four semesters during his time with the Orange.
Playing both safety and linebacker, Whitner has contributed in a multitude of ways for the Orange's defense. Through 34 games, he has tallied 76 tackles (45 solo) with four passes defended. Appearing in every game during the 2017 season, Whitner was special teams game captain at LSU.
Fernandez is a senior shortstop majoring in health and physical education in the School of Education. For her academic pursuits, the Carmel, N.Y. native has been named to the ACC Acaedmic Honor Roll twice.
The senior has started 178 of her 179 games played with the Orange, accumulating a batting average of .322. She is currently second on the team for the most multi-hit games this season with 11.
Whitner and the football team will be ending spring ball this Friday at the Carrier Dome during the 2018 Syracuse Football Spring Preview presented by TK 99. Gates A, B, and C will open at 5 p.m. and the scrimmage will begin at 7 p.m. Fernandez and the softball team will also play this Friday, facing off against the Louisville Cardinals at Skytop Stadium at 4 p.m.
